Jubilee Women’s Center provides transitional housing and support services for women who are homeless or at risk for becoming homeless. Located in Capitol Hill, Jubilee is one of Seattle’s oldest transitional housing programs for women. Jubilee manages two residential facilities accounting for 34% of Seattle’s transitional housing for homeless women. Our mission is to help women make a successful transition to permanent housing, sustainable employment, and independent living.  

Position Description:

Coordinate Jubilee Women’s Center’s community-based speaking engagements to raise awareness and support for Jubilee’s program. Position is unpaid, though college credit is an option.
•	Responsible for the research, outreach, scheduling and coordination of Jubilee’s speaking engagements to: community, civic groups, panels etc.
•	Facilitate speaking training, facilitator training, and foster positive relationships with community, civic groups and panels. 
•	Respond to all inquiries regarding Jubilee speaking engagements. 
•	Maintain up-to-date information kits and assist with new marketing materials as needed. 
•	Write, edit and proof speaking engagement materials. 
•	Create web and newsletter content for speaking engagement information and inquiries. 
•	Prepare monthly status report.

Qualifications/Requirements:

This position requires a dynamic self-motivated person, able to multi-task and work with many different types of people. Previous work in a non-profit as well as a strong commitment to homelessness and/or women’s issues preferred. 

Education: Course work towards a degree from an accredited college or University; preferably in Public Relations, Marketing, Communications, English or Business.

Job Description

The Glass Art Society, a non-profit arts organization, whose purpose is to encourage excellence, to advance education, to promote the appreciation and development of the glass arts, and to support the worldwide community of artists who work with glass, is offering an internship for someone working on a degree in Communications, Public Relations, English, Journalism, or related area. The Seattle Ronald McDonald House is a home-away-from-home for more than 800 families each year while their seriously ill child receives treatment at Seattle Children’s Hospital.  

The Meal Program Supervisor is responsible for managing the volunteer groups who provide dinner for our families. Preparing dinner for our families is a huge undertaking and involves cooking for a very large number of people.  Combine that with numerous guidelines to follow, the impact of being in the House with families who are under a great deal of stress and children who are seriously ill, and that can be very overwhelming for some groups.

The Meal Program Supervisor is vital to the evening’s success with the goal being to provide a nice meal for our families and a rewarding experience for the group while staying within our preparation and clean up guidelines.  We depend on the Meal Program Supervisor to welcome our groups to the House, direct them through set up, be available to answer questions throughout the evening and to say good-bye and thank the groups at the end of the evening.  

This position requires someone who is mature and confident.  The Meal Program Supervisor must be diplomatic, comfortable giving directions, resourceful, enjoy working with people and have a good sense of humor.   The Meal Program Supervisor has overall responsibility for the kitchen and implementation of food handling guidelines during meals.

Responsibilities include:

Pre-Dinner:
•	Greeting the group & completing forms.
•	Set up – assuring all needed items and spaces are available.
•	Guide the group as needed, assure safe food handling and answer questions. 
	
Dinner:
•	Dinner service begins at 5:00 buffet style. Buffet service continues until at least 6:00, and until families have stopped coming through the buffet line.
•	Sit down and enjoy dinner with the group or families.
•	Advise on refilling dishes and food temperature.

Clean Up:
•	Make certain food storage guidelines are followed and leftovers marked properly.
•	Make sure kitchen is cleaned, all items put away, and garbage emptied as needed.
•	Thank group at end of evening.

Position Description

The Field Department of the ACLU of Washington (ACLU-WA) coordinates and encourages the activism of ACLU members statewide to promote and protect civil liberties. Activism occurs through the ACLU-WA chapters, student clubs, the e-mail activist network, and members. Our activities to advance an issue include leafleting, organizing phone banks, staffing information tables, and providing resources to community groups. Field Interns are utilized year-round to assist the Field Department in achieving its goals.

Higher Education Funding:
Washington State has proposed cutting funding to the University of Washington by 13%.  A 13% cut in the state’s total higher education budget would have a significantly negative impact on higher education. It would create larger class sizes, fewer programs and fewer students as well.  We are working with student groups across the state to make sure our state legislators, the governor, members of Congress, and the president-elect hear our voices and mitigate funding cuts to higher education.  

100 Days to Cool the Planet:
Everyone knows that global warming is one of the most serious problems facing our generation.  The good news is that we already have the solutions that we need to solve global warming.  Not only that, but President- elect Obama has said he wants to create jobs all over the country to “Repower America” by switching to clean renewable energy!  Unfortunately there are powerful interests- oil companies like Exxon and utility companies who stand in the way of this change.  So we are working to make sure that Congress stands up to these powerful interests and passes a visionary renewable energy law within the first hundred days of the new Obama administration that will stop global warming AND Stimulate the economy (that gives us until April 30th).  We are going to hold creative events every month (including signing a giant windmill) to get media attention and invite Congressperson Jim McDermott to be a 100 Days Climate Hero.  We will also continue to lead the way here by making UW more energy efficient and educating students about the things WE can do to cut our global warming footprint.

Affordable Textbooks
As we all know, textbooks are expensive!  And with the rising costs of tuition, textbooks create another financial burden for students.  The textbook market is a broken one because the consumers (students) don’t have a choice in the product we are buying.  This year, we are going to be working on promoting the use of open textbooks by professors which are textbooks published online for free, and build the support of these textbooks through the UW Bookstore and Administration.  We hope to have several faculty members using these innovative texts by the spring quarter!

Hunger & Homelessness
We are the richest country in the world and yet there are 8,500 people in King County each night without food to eat or a bed to sleep in.  We are raising this issue on campus in order to make students aware of the ease and importance of solving this problem by getting involved in the community.  This year will be hosting a Hunger Cleanup- a day of volunteer action- where we will go out into the community to work, and at the same time raise money $10,000!  We will also be pledging 100 hours of volunteerism to go along with Obama’s call to service.  We need to come together and resolve to fight poverty!

(TNT) has grown to become an unparalleled sports training program. More than 380,000
participants, from first timers to seasoned athletes, have trained with the Team and achieved
their best at marathons, half marathons, triathlons, 100-mile century bike rides and hiking
adventures. Team in training is the world’s largest endurance sports training program and has
successfully raised over $750 million in support of LLS/ mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma,
Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Position Summary: Interns working with Team in Training will work with LLS staff to recruit,
support and maintain a TNT team through an event season.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Work with Team In Training staff and coaches to provide team support in marathon, half
marathon, triathlon or cycle events.

adventures. Team in training is the world’s largest endurance sports training program and has
successfully raised over $750 million in support of LLS/ mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma,

Position Summary: Interns working with Team in Training will help support public relations
efforts in recruiting new participants to the program. The intern will work independently and with
staff on the following areas: public relations, event promotion, race flyering, sponsorship and

Duties and Responsibilities

• Determine venues and events most suited to reach target demographic

Youngstown Cultural Arts Center is a multi-purpose facility committed to
providing space and support for creative expression, community building,
positive youth development and collaboration. Located in the heart of
the Delridge neighborhood in West Seattle, the Center offers exciting

performances, classes and workshops to business, civic and social
occasions. Available resources include a recording studio, media lab,

program for high school students that offers classes such as Rock Band,

for the King County Food and Fitness Initiative which is dedicated to
providing resources for developing healthy community in Delridge and
White Center.
 
Youngstown seeks an Administrative Intern who is interested in applying
his or her skills towards non-profit facility and event management,
communications, and website development. The Intern would work closely
with the Operations Director and Communications Coordinator for a period
of at least three months, and would be responsible for website
management and the monthly newsletter. He or she will learn to operate
the Event Management System, and will regularly use Constant Contact and
Microsoft Office.

Seattle Audubon seeks a volunteer Project Manager for the Centennial Book and Oral History Projects

The Project Manager will be the prime coordinator of the two main projects of Seattle Audubon’s History Committee: the oral history project and the Seattle Audubon Centennial book project. The oral history and book projects will primarily run independently, but coordination of these projects as well as the other projects are necessary. The Project Manager will assist in recruiting volunteers for research and presentation, as well as interact with the Executive Director to assist in developing budget requests. The Project Manager will prepare the meeting agendas and chair the meetings. Time requirement will vary depending on the role the Project Manager adopts. As a coordinator, only a few hours a month are needed. If the Project Manager also takes on research, writing, and/or presentation work, the hours could increase substantially. The workload should increase as we near 2016. Currently the History Committee meets quarterly for two hours.

The Project Manager should be an organized self-starter who has an interest in documenting and presenting the interesting history of Seattle Audubon. Experience in such projects, including presentation of the results, would be a substantial bonus.

Sightline Institute, the Northwest's sustainability and progressive think tank, is looking for a talented writer who wants to learn the business of raising money for social change-a grants intern. The grants intern will have an opportunity to acquire some highly marketable

The intern will work directly with the Development Associate to assist in Sightline's fast-paced grants program. Relative areas of daily interest will include community awareness raising efforts associated with public relations and marketing. The intern will have exposure to many facets of the organization and will have a role in the solicitation of in-kind donations. Monthly and quarterly newsletter content formulation and writing will also be emphasized.

 
Compassion for foster children and the desire to improve their quality of life are two qualities that are desired.  A basic understanding of foster care would be helpful, but not essential.  Prior community service experience would also be helpful, but not essential.  An intern with a strong interest in marketing and public relations would be really wonderful.


Keeping abreast of the most current statistics available is a very important task within any agency which seeks public and private support.  The intern would be involved in that role through various means, which would include, but not be limited to:  internet research, government agency research, interviews with case managers of Olive Crest and other key staff.  Writing newsletter stories will also involve interviewing staff and perhaps foster parents. 

The student should submit two writing samples and a resume.

Orientation will consist of a series of one-on-one meetings with staff members of all capacities.  The intern will have a thorough knowledge of all staff roles and responsibilities.

Web Design and Content Management – East African Center

We are looking for one or two students to work under light supervision of a
Project Manager to completely redesign the eastafricancenter.org website.

Not only will we be giving the site a fresh look, but developing a
backup/recovery strategy and content management plan so the organization can
manage the site ongoing at low cost.

This is an amazing opportunity for anyone interested in UI/website design,
content management and/or MIS as this project really digs deep into all three
areas. Here’s what we will be doing:

1.	Update and re-design the website.
2.	Create a data backup & recovery plan.
3.	Build a new, dynamic section of the site where people can sponsor children to
go to school.
4.	Develop a Content Management plan, which includes Documentation and
instructions for managing the site using Joomla.


As non-profits world wide struggle to update their technologies in a
cost-effective way, this project’s aim is not only to revamp the East African
Center’s website, but also lay the foundation for other organizations needing
similar services. In doing so, this project will open doors to jobs and
consulting gigs, not to mention it will look fantastic in your portfolio!


Intern Responsibilities:

Interns will be responsible for all aspects of the site planning and redesign;
working under the Project Manager’s supervision.



The web intern should have all or most of the following skills/knowledge/ideas:

•	Absolutely must be self-driven who can work without supervision, but is able

The Chron’s & Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA), Northwest chapter, is seeking a highly skilled intern to assist CCFA staff with the Foundation’s newest event fundraiser program-“Team Challenge.” 

Program Overview:
Team Challenge is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s newest endurance/fundraising program that trains participants to run or walk a half marathon, while raising critical research dollars for the Foundation. Team Challenge trains participants for half marathons located in exotic locales across the country. Past event locations have included San Jose California and Napa California. 

Participants receive professional training from CPR certified coaches and are offered a wide variety of health and nutrition classes throughout their training. In addition, all participants receive fundraising support to reach the minimum fundraising requirement set forth by the Foundation’s National headquarters. 

In exchange for raising funds and awareness for our patients, Team Challenge participants receive an all expense paid trip to the half marathon location. This includes all air, hotel, and ground transportation expenses. 

Team Challenge provides participants with everything they need to cross the finish line. Whether this is someone’s first or sixth half marathon, the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation is with them every step of the way!  

Job Description/Duties:
•	Work with and report to the Team Challenge Endurance Manager (TCEM) in creating and implementing grass roots marketing strategies to promote Team Challenge. 

•	Assist the TCEM with the submission of press releases to electronic and local print/media contacts.

•	Assist the TCEM in recruiting participants for the upcoming fall 2008 season of Team Challenge. Attend and help facilitate such recruitment events.

•	Follow up with recruitment leads and assist the TCEM in sighing up new recruits.

•	Assist TCEM with some administrative duties.  For example, website updates; creating/filing Team Challenge participant profiles; organizing event material such as flyers/posters, etc.  


Requirements/Skills:
•	1-2 years of professional work experience
•	Excellent oral and written communication skills reflecting solid customer service in person, via the telephone and email required

Research project # 2 - Horse Hoarding & Collecting

We are currently writing a grant to form a task force to study the issue
of collecting and hoarding of horses.  Hoarding is a recognized
psychological problem that has OCD and addictive components.  There has
not been a lot written about this problem as it relates to horse owners. 

We would like to form a team composed of several disciplines to study the
problem specifically as it relates to horses.  Questions that will be
considered by this group would include - what is the impact on the horse
(e.g. insufficient socialization, limited freedom or lack of movement,
starvation and other forms of neglect), psychological components relating
to the person (addictive or compulsive behavior, economic stress,
compassion fatigue), impact on the environment (unhealthy or unsanitary
conditions, should horses be licensed?)

Website Design and Content Management

The goal of this project is to re-design HFH's website by using tools
that are easy to maintain by relatively unskilled volunteers.  Our
current website can be viewed at www.hopeforhorses.net.  The content is
out of date, largely because we do not have a dedicated webmaster, but
also because the proprietary content management system is cumbersome to
use.  We would like a site that is very simple to navigate, has no more
than 6 or 8 main pages, and can manage lots of photographs, a few forms,
and data that changes often (at least weekly). 

The project is best suited to a marketing, communications, or IT major. 
The redesign should take no more than a month, and the updates take
approximately one-two hours per week.  This project could be managed by
one or more students, and requires access to the Internet.

Research Survey - Rise in Number of Abandoned & Neglected Horses

The goal of this project is to gather statistics as well as anecdotal
evidence of the rise in number of horses being reported as neglected,
abused, or abandoned across the country; and to classify the reasons for
those reports (e.g. financial vs. uneducated/unskilled owners).  This
information will be used to develop a grant aimed at reducing the problem
specifically in Washington, and to create a model for other states. 

The project could take 30-90 days to complete and could be done by more
than one student.  Access to Internet and telephone resources are
required.

Background: Light the Night is The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's national
evening fundraising walk to celebrate and commemorate lives touched by
cancer. Participants carry illuminated balloons- red balloons

representing loved ones who have passed away. The Paper Balloon Icon
program is one fundraising facet for Light the Night; retail locations
agree to sell paper balloon icons for a set period of time to raise money
for the event, as well as create awareness surrounding the event, LLS,
and our mission.  Money from the Light the Night and the sale of paper
icons goes to support The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission of curing
leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improving the
quality of life of patients and their families.

Position Summary: LLS is seeking a non-profit/marketing intern to assist
the Light the Night campaign coordinator to recruit, grow, and retain
retail partners for the Paper Balloon Icon program, as well as develop
and distribute promotional materials via online or print media relations

I'm Lynn Neil, the Women's Show Director for the St. Luke's Women's
Fitness Celebration in Boise, Idaho.

I need some assistance in finding a GREAT intern/interns for the
Celebration. The position has been listed on various university web
sites, however, due to the association with St. Luke's, the applicants
are coming from the health services department but what I REALLY NEED IS
A MARKETING/PR/EVENT person.  First and foremost, we are a business that
produces an event.  We are looking for an intern who might have career
interests in the fields of Advertising, Public Relations, Marketing,
Sales, Event Planning or Sports Promotion.  The intern will have an
opportunity to interact in the Boise community with Art Directors, media
(TV-Radio-Print), AV Production companies, Event Planning logistics and
sponsors of our event.  I want to create a special project for the
intern/interns which would include a marketing/outreach program to
Canyon County to bring in more 5K participants.  This is real-world
experience with dead-lines, budgets and an opportunity to get  hands-on
training to go out and start a career.

The St. Luke's Women's Fitness Celebration is a five-day event
encompassing Woman in Business, a two-day Women's Consumer Show and a 5K
Run, Walk and Stroll.  Currently, it is the largest, all-women event of
it's kind in the United States! Our consumer show attendance is over
25,000 people and the 5K had 12,500 participants this year. Now in it's
16th year, we are the most anticipated event in September in Boise. Our

Information and Referral Helpline volunteers/interns will offer information and referrals to callers and answer basic questions regarding body image and eating disorders in a caring and compassionate manner. •	When deemed appropriate by Helpline Supervisor, may assist in the training of newer Helpline volunteers/interns.
•	Contribute to the association’s mission of eliminating eating disorders and body dissatisfaction.
2. Program and Administrative Duties:
•	Assist program staff with ongoing educational and outreach projects.
•	Assist with minor administrative tasks as needed.

Required Qualifications:

•	Meticulous attention to detail and strong organizational skills.  
•	Excellent communication skills.  
•	Demonstrated ability to provide quality customer service.

Time Frame and Commitment:
•	Completion of 20 hour Helpline training
•	Minimum of 3 hours per week for a minimum of 6 months

Position Summary: 
Contribute to NEDA’s mission of expanding understanding of eating disorders and supporting families by helping to distribute educational materials, follow up on material orders, and perform other tasks essential to effective customer service.  

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Educational materials
•	Pack and ship educational materials
•	Print shipping labels
•	Print, copy and assemble educational materials such as notebooks and curricula
•	Organize materials storage
•	At discretion of volunteer & supervisor, may answer or return phone calls with individuals and organizations ordering materials

2. Administrative Duties:
•	File invoices and other records
•	Organize files
•	May perform data entry
•	May design tracking systems such as charts or spreadsheets
•	Assist staff with projects 

Required Qualifications:
•	Positive attitude
•	Meticulous attention to detail
•	Motivated to provide quality customer service
•	Able to work effectively as an individual and as part of a team  


Time Frame and Commitment:
Minimum of 3 hours per week for a minimum of 10 weeks

Noel House Programs is the largest women-only shelter services provider in King County.  As a non-profit, the continued provision of these crucial services depends in large part on raising funds from Seattle community members.  While we hold regular fundraising events, we realize that we have left the online world more or less untapped.
      
   
   We would like to utilize social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook to develop greater awareness and interest in our programs, in addition to making online donations possible.  For a tech-savvy student interested in mass communications – particularly in online communications and micro-fundraising – this would be an incredibly great opportunity to add to their résumés and to spend some time working for a wonderful organization.
      
   
   This position would grant an interested student with an immense amount of creative flexibility, as they would be able to build the online profiles from scratch.  We are very interested in collaboration and definitely welcome fresh perspectives on our work.  As an added benefit, the student would be able to create their own schedule and could accomplish much of the work from home.
      
   
   The position requires a commitment of no more than 10 hours a month and I cannot stress enough what a great résumé-builder this is.  The flexible hours make it a great opportunity for busy students to gain volunteer work experience and collect a letter of recommendation from a highly respected Seattle non-profit.
