Tossing coins in Rome

Study Abroad

Rome, Italy

Application Deadline: May 24, 2012

ColosseumExperience the interplay of culture, identity, and communication in one of Europe’s most fascinating cities. Students will explore Rome and its surroundings to investigate how cultural and artistic expression – language, media, politics, architecture, food, wine, urban design, social dynamics and more -- express local, regional, and national identity.  We will also consider Italian identity within Europe and on a global stage.  The curriculum will present theories related to social and national identity, globalization and cultural change, as well as methodologies for observation and documentation of cultural patterns.  We will spend a lot of time using the city as a classroom for observation and experience.  The program includes excursions to many sites – museums, markets, architectural wonders, gardens, vineyards, etc. – in and around Rome. Students will present their work using both writing and photography.

To facilitate the transition to Rome and day-to-day interactions, students take a 3-week intensive Italian language course and receive training in intercultural communication.
